Evolution Korea
For a long time the Korean scientific community refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that it could increase the credibility of the movement. Silence is no longer an alternative.
The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species change into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. In time the genetic variability could cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to future generations.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists understand how living things work and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries like new drugs.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so many aspects of the universe and life on this planet and has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to note that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs, since the theory deals only with processes, objects, and events in the physical world.
In reality, many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. For instance, some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.
It is essential that scientists and educators speak out for the teaching of evolution. In some countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This belief is based on a variety of reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of treatments and other treatments, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most common kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth started only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they're just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary as well as special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution.†This is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the original species were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization 에볼루션 게이밍 that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has achieved its first victory by taking away examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.
STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved a number of things in the past through seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 7 and 8 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
